Donor Management and Appreciation

It is not only essential to recognize donors to foster the donation relationship, it’s also required. Once a nonprofit’s tax-exempt status is determined, all 501c3 nonprofits are required to provide donors with a receipt for their donation. Receipts can be issued at any time from the point of gift to the conclusion of the tax year.

While providing a receipt is a federal requirement, it’s also a great way to show appreciation to donors and seek future gifts. Successful organizations often include a letter containing success stories and a personal note of thanks with donation receipts.

Additionally, recognizing donors is a great way to maintain relationships with people who believe in your organization’s mission. While donor recognition is most commonly associated with named plaques on walls or donated items, there are other unique ways to showcase donors.

Hosting a donor appreciation event is a great way to thank donors while encouraging additional giving. These events showcase your organization’s most significant achievements while also acknowledging your most generous and committed supporters.

You can follow this same line of thinking for donor appreciation displays. Instead of just listing names on a wall, share your organization’s purpose and vision front and center surrounded by the names of your top contributors. Include photos from events and success statements while weaving in the big donors’ names. Showcase that they are a vital part of the organization’s mission. When completed, share a photo in your organization’s newsletter or website and invite donors to be part of the organization’s ongoing story. For organizations operating out of a board member’s home, a digital appreciation wall on the nonprofit’s website achieves the same results in a virtual format.
